It's amazing how well sales of the E60 have held up as the model run comes to a close. BMW sold 3,914 5 series in December, up 6% from the same month last year. But the Mercedes E-Class outsold the 5er with 4,567 units (up 32% over last year).

Here is the annual sales totals for the E60 (calendar year counts, not model year):

2003 11,535 (U.S. sales of the E60 started in September 2003)
2004 45,584
2005 52,722
2006 56,765
2007 54,142
2008 45,916
2009 40,109

So while the final full calendar year sales of the E60 are the slowest of the model run (and this is during the Great Recession), even that figure is nearly as good as the best year of the E39.

Here is the annual sales totals for the E39:

1996 22,775 (E39 sales started in the U.S. in April and this figure is annual 5 series sales - I don't have details by model)
1997 31,347
1998 35,100
1999 38,218
2000 39,703
2001 40,005
2002 40,842
2003 35,429

Top U.S. selling vehicles (2009):
Ford F-Series 398,279
Toyota Camry 340,511
Chevy Silverado Pickup 316,544
Honda Accord 287,492
Toyota Corolla 266,429
Honda Civic 259,722
Nissan Altima 203,568
Honda CR-V 191,214
Ford Fusion 180,671
Ram Pickup 177,268
Ford Escape 173,344
Chevy Impala 165,565
Chevy Malibu 161,568
Ford Focus 160,397
Toyota RAV4 149,088
Toyota Prius 139,682
Hyundai Sonata 120,028
GMC Sierra Pickup 111,842
Toyota Tacoma 111,824
VW Jetta 108,427

You mean, there are only about 300,000 E60s in the US? Boy, do I feel exclusive or what?? Since we're so few, why don't we start flashing our lights to each other like the Porsche folks do?

I wonder how many of BMW's new car sales are actually leases?

I can't believe the F-150 and Silverado are still in the top 5 despite the higher gas prices and recession.

I just bought me one of them there TA-HOES.....gas ain't that bad in the midwest and I could use E85 if it shoots up to 4 bucks again...people love their big gas guzzlin, CO2 emmiting trucks. I know I do...

1. The number I've seen is something like 60%

2. Fleet Sales

I highly doubt that fleet sales are the reason for the F150 and Silverado sales numbers.

I tried to talk my wife into getting a Tahoe. I ended up getting her a MB GL-450 instead.

I agree - these aren't rental cars and not too many gov't organizations pruchase them in large numbers.
