IS this true or is it just sales talk to persuade us to buy the car?

I asked if it had satnav he said no, but the software for it can be added, but is software ALL it would need to suddenly aquaire sat nav?

Uhh, no. The screens are different (nav screens are wider), you need the GPS antenna, and a DVD drive (I don't think the cars without NAV had a DVD drive - though I could certainly be wrong).

Oh, wait a minute..

You're in Europe.. If I were you I'd wait for a European guy to speak up, the cars are different on this side of the pond..

The screens are wider only on the Professional Navigation systems. The Business Navigation uses the smaller screen itself. But I'm almost sure that you will need to change the MASK unit atleast and get an antenna connected in order to get GPS working, beside the software ofcourse. Business systems are not available in the US so everyone there assumes that in order to have GPS you must have the wider screens and must have two slots on the radio, both of these are not correct/needed for the Business Navigation in Europe.

Haggle a price for the complete work done and let the dealer manage the headache.

In its simplest sense MASK is the main computer of the car. But to the drive it looks like the main CD drive!
