Stupid question, but a friend asked me the other day, as we went through daylight savings time the other day, if the BMW can automatically set the time for the daylight savings time cycle?
I didn't think so, as I've had to jump into my '05 530i and adjust the clock since I've owned it.
How about the later model E60's? Do they automatically adjust the clock for daylight savings time?
Thx

Seems like such an obvious thing to tap into the GPS, mobile phone, or radio networks for a hyper accurate time set. Could be an easy option within idrive to use 'network time' or manual time. But alas, no.

We've been wondering for years why BMW doesn't get it's time signal from the GPS satellites like pretty much every other car out there.
One thing to note, however, is that the GPS satellites do not correct for DST. That's up to the device that's receiving the signal. In other words, on cars that get their clocks set my satellite, you still have to tell it whether or not you wish to observe DST or not. Yes, the time zone can be detected via GPS, but there are still some time zones that have mixed participation in DST so it's easier to just have the car adjust the time forward or back one hour. Also, I think the satellites only send a UTC signal (sort of like GMT) which means the car has to adjust it for the proper time zone.
Want to know what's even crazier? My F10 does not get it's time from the satellite (you have to manually set it) but it still asks you to enter your time zone. Why would it need that information??
