whilst trying to reset the microfilter service, i found this.

with the engine on (running) i held down the trip reset button for about 15 seconds and it displays the build date (says build datum 10.10.2005) and then a load of german script.....
neat..

also what is the "technical" name for the soft red lights that shine down onto the gear stick / i-drive controller ? (just curious)

Not sure what BMW term the soft light, but on other vehicles it's referred to as 'Indirect Night Lighting'! As I say though, not sure if BMW term it as this?

Very cool, I'll have to try that! I think the lighting is something like "ambience lighting"

Nice find and a good question.

BMW's have had the center console light for a long time.
I really do like it, it works swell and gives a luxurious feeling.

See this.

Nice! Thanks for the tip! I just gave it a try... When you hold down the trip reset button there are a few different things you can scroll through.. none of which made any sense to me.. hahah... but I guess my build date is January 19, 2004 according to what I saw.. crappy iPhone pic below:

In that men? you can see a lot of info

Litres in the tank, voltage of battery, real speed, temperatures, rpm, etc.

Never paid attention to that date, but I know my car born between 15 and 22 july 2005.
