for 04 545i, the in-dash CD player doesn't seem to play MP3 files.
is there a software update that will enable MP3 support or do i need to upgrade the hardware?

bear in mind with the new ISTA system the whole car will have to be updated, can take upto 7 hours and that's if it works first time

Check the sticker inside the driver's side door for your build date and read the link I added above. If you car was built after 10/05 or later, yes. But I suspect that is model year 2006 here in the states so I don't think it possible for your 2005 without Nav.
