D/S Mode - Is it possible to switch into M without shifting gears?

Is there anyway to move from D/S to M# without down or upshifting if you're already moving and not in first gear? Obviously if you're stopped/already in first gear you can downshift from D/S to make it go to M1, but is it possible to switch into the current gear while in D/S mode? From my experience when in D/S shifting up or down puts you into M but it also changes the gear up or down. How can I get it to show the current gear and work from there? Is that possible?

Pretty sure it can't be done... you have to switch gears to get into manual mode.

I don't think you can, but I usually shift down, so the car gives me more power and then work my way up.

Yes you can move between gears after moving the shift to DS ... while systems will prevent over-reving, a careful driver will pay attention to speed and rpm's as you would when driving a manual transmission car.

This bugs me too. I hate having to switch to a different gear just to go into manual mode.
