Nope, flew to Frankfurt and used our airline miles on AA. Rented a car in Frankfurt and drove to Munich. When I do this again

we did miles to frankfurt from LAX (via chicago)
this allowed us to take a rental car through heidelberg to pickup one more castle on our way down to munich.
