One of mine decided to stay in out position, I removed it & fixed it in closed position until mended. Dealer replaced it with an identical holder. Wanted to charge! until convinced it had not been misused. All OK now.
My cupholder also sticks and only works and opens up when it wants to. It makes its own decisions. I hope to get this fixed the next time I am in for service.
I still think leaving a large drink in this cupholder is a risk, since it can still spill into all the front panel electronics.

The cupholder has been redesigned. I think it has the same part #, but works much better now.

Yes the cup holders have been redesigned, my dealer replaced both of them free of charge at the last service, i didnt even mention them!! they work much better, they have a really chunky bmw feel to them now!
