It's the same orange color as the rest of the dash lights on pretty much every BMW made for at least the last few decades...
Been out and checked mine and it is definitely a Red LED on my LCI. When the cruise is set it is Green, but as said when the brakes are applied or stalk is pushed up or down (i.e. disengaged but still active) it definitely turns Red and is not the same colour orange as the rest of the illuminated dash lights. Will post a picture when I can get around to it.

I think the E60 has a very good cruise control, it's almost flawless and I like the 1km/h / 10km/h step switch as well as the visible indicator (LED) on your speed meter.

However, this LED is always green when I have activated the cruise control. It never turns orange.

I know it's a 2 colour LED, see picture below which I took when I tested the instrument cluster. So the hardware is there but the orange LED never lights. Does anyone know why? Has anyone seen the orange LED light up on their LCI cars?

Ok, this may not be the most important thing in the world but as an engineer I just want to know why...
Same here. 520d LCI, only green when engaged, off otherwise. It may indeed have something to do with the fact that we didn't get some of the goodies such as the full CC. After all, we also didn't get the shift indicator (assuming that you shift gear manually).

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure that the 520d is the exception, as it also does not actively brake with the CC (e.g. downhill) and all the other LCI models do.
I have never seen the orange (or red) LED light up in normal mode. Probably the upgraded 520d will get the updated CC as well in September, and hopefully my car will get it after a SW upgrade as I don't believe the hardware is different.

(as an answer to xiTouring: These LEDs are only present in LCI cars)

The marker at the perimeter of the speedometer didn't illuminate (or change colors) on my 2004 car, only on my 2008 car.

Must be a LCI thing.

I would also agree that it is red and not orange as the rest of the instrument lighting. Could there be a difference in the US and EU specifications?

I took a closer look this morning and sure, you can perceive it as orange if you want to. I guess peoples perception of colors may differ.
