My windshield cracked sometime this morning or last night. I got in my car this morning and lo and behold, there was this inverted Y crack on my windshield on the passenger side. The crack starts from the very top to about 1/3 of the windshield. As far as I can tell, this was not caused by a rock because there was no point of impact on the windshield. It just cracked for no apparent reason.

Anyone experienced this before? Is it covered under the warranty?

My car is scheduled for Jan 18 at Tulley BMW in Nashua, NH.

Service Items :

1. Emissions recall
2. Heated seats recall
3. Restraint System Fault
4. Occasional engine fault
5. Cracked windshield
6. Wipers

Yes people have had that problem and had the windshield replaced under warranty if there is not evidence of impact. Others have not been so lucky.

I had mine repaired yesterday.
Since there was a slight impact i didn't even bother contacting BMW, costed me
euro 50 to fix the 2 cracks.
The cracks where only a few centimeters long and after repair not visible anymore.

Mine was cracked on the p-side, about six inches from the bottom. Took it to the dealer and they "claimed" it was a small rock. I asked when a BMW service rep was coming to the dealership. Got a date, and made an appointment to have a second opinion from the real BMW reps.

A service guy explained how the service mgr determines fault... He runs a ballpoint pen along the crack... if he feels resistance, he determines it was a rock! Not, "no" but "Oh, Hell No!"

Get a second opinion from the dealer. If it was a Toyota, yeah, you could blow me off... On a $45,000 machine... uh-uh, buddy...

Good luck.

They did the pen test on mine to, but I passed and replaced it no problems. Funny, last night I saw my windshield was cracked again but this time I think it was a rock. Oh well, at least I don't have HUD because I heard that windshield was crazy expensive.

Ballpoint test? I'll try this on the crack... visually though, it looks "clean".

It's amazing that these dealerships will try anything to avoid doing warranty work.

I think its a reasonable test, they should only replace it if resulted from a defect not an impact. You can do your own ballpoint test to see if there is an impact mark. If the pen gets stuck on something then its an impact.
I have had one replaced under warranty and I am going in for my second one due to an impact.
