I am a insurance agent, florida law states that your insurance company has to replace your front windshield no matter what without a dedutable, so in this case for free. I dont know how the laws in CA are.

Yea, I was talking to a buddy of mine about this a while back, interesting law, but just insuring safety I'm sure. Is there a break down on why the insurance company has to do it?

I've got four medium sized chips and one star on my windshield. All happened within a week. Very discouraging to know that it can happen anytime, any place with any way of driving. I wasn't even near another car when the big one hit.
On my last car I had it replaced by a non original and had trouble with it. a month later another stone hit and I had a star again. really bad.
so on this one I don't bother yet, it's in the middle of the windshield, not in my view and it seems to work like a protection: only new windows get stones, once hit they don't hit again.

Definately worth asking your insurance agent about. In my case they replaced with oem glass, very low deductable, and no rate increase!

a small rock hit my sunroof and it exploded ....
You can not replace just the glass you must purchase a sunroof ... cost $1400 labour $1000 .... $2500 replacement job.
Apparently "exploding sunroof" is common for x3 and e90s.
