I'm genuinely shocked by this post.

I've dinged a few alloys in my time and the sort of damage shown here just shouldn't happen.

I hit a kerb at about 40mph in a bmw, burst the tyre and dented the rim - nothing like this....

ANYONE experiencing this should have BMW bending over backwards to replace rims and do anything else to stop them being sued to kingdom come.

Totally unacceptable....

I am so glad that none of the posters have been hurt.

If it were me I would be demanding new wheels or a new car - no discussion or debate.

I am surprised that you haven't seen each other's cars being neighbors. The OP would probably notice a beautiful E60 like yours if he has seen it around. How is the rear bumper coming along BTW.

That's unbelievable guys,
Olus is a neighbour of mine!!!!

He lives thee blocks nearby, 3 minutes away by feet.

So, we are now, two Greeks into the forum, living in the same neighbourhood

I went this afternoon at the cellar where my old style 138 are stored, to see the inside details.
They are manufactured in Austria by AAG company. I have never had any problems, (with Potenzas RFT) since the time I've replaced them with my new M style 167 rims.

On my OEM 138's it says "China" on the inside...
I hope the quality is as good as European made rims!
When it comes to forging metal or processing metal in general, China has to improve significantly with its practices. The quality can be substandard and I believe only a handful of companies there have the expertise to do things properly. My business have experienced substandard Chinese metal products in various forms from cracking refrigerant copper pipes to regrinding blades exploding under stress after only 200 hours of operations (versus 5000 hours from Australian made blades where it just wears out, not explode).

What's my point? When it comes to high end forging or extruding of metal...beware of Chinese products.

The question I keep wondering about is whether the runflats contributed to the wheel cracking or if the runflats contributed to the wheel/tire staying together enough to maintain control of the car.

I seem to remember the first time this type of thing wheel issue was posted here by JDN, he was pretty convinced that the runflats actually helped in his case.

Sure, the runflats may be so stiff that the wheel cracks -- but then again, maybe the stiffness is what's saving people from a worse outcome?

I use my car only for weekend trips, all the other days i keep it safe covered in the parking. I use to ride my motorbike, or my Punto, for everyday movements inside Athens traffic. I think, I've seen his car a couple of times, a black one too, but i thought that just was passing via the main street of our neighbourhood.
Everyday use for mine, is minimal, like unluckily, the day when that old Renault stopped on my rear bumper.
Waiting now the dealer to receive the M pack parts, i hope next weekend i'll be ready.

Welcome and sorry for you! Thx GOD you and your family is ok, and a shame on BMW that they let these happen, spec. that normally they are BBS and most of BBS can even survive a big hit on the curb directly.

and you guys still think oem is the best? time for forged aftermarket and NON RFTs.

Dunlop was once one of the biggest in high performance tires, today

I am sure that BMW have been informed about that problem, but think about the cost to recall & replace all the 138 and 124 style rims and/or tires all over the world. 138 is the most usual rim style everywhere (except Greece) 134 - 115 is the most usual here (16" without RFTs), much less style 138 -17" RFT, some style 124-18" RFT, and some style 135-18" on Msport pack equipped E60s.

BTW, this is a "must have" web page about rims, tires, alignments, etc.

I've posted it once in the past, but now again, I think I have to repost it FYI (Really useful technical informations)
