For 50-55K you are getting into Alpina B5 territory, albeit with around 60TKM on the clock. This is praticality/comfort meets supercar!! This sounds like the perfect fit for what you are looking for, however maybe a little above the budget you are setting yourself?
The 550i looks good, but does not strike as much of a change, except for the engine of course.
I like westcoast550's suggestion of an M3 Limosine as well.
The 135i pocket-rocket and a lesser powered or older 5er could also be interesting. Not sure if I would go for two cars, if I could everything I needed in one car which is more exclusive.
