Sorry about your accident, you can see from my signature that I was in one similar. There are actually aluminum frame rails, that if are bent can(have to) be replaced. Mine was finally totaled, it took about a month and I was constantly talking with the dealership's sales department and body shop as well as the appraising company.
I think that without front end damage to go along with the rear damage, it may be hard to get enough the repair bill high enough to total it. Of course, there is always hidden damage that we cannot see through pictures.
Take care that back too, I am still having a time with mine and it has been 4 1/2 months.
