Same problem with my car. 520d 2008.
The lights don't follow the left/right rotation of steering. And cornering light failure message on dash and on screen.
Made a diagnosis in service. Conclusion: communication problem between LMA and both SMC's on my headlights.
They said must reflash/rewrite the LMA module. Is this right?

if fault on both SMC could be an issue with light module. I would encode LM first if this does not help then get a replacement LM

And this was the solution: LM replacement. Failed because of the aftermarket xenon in fog lights.
Finally i repaired the old LM too.
The LM encode did not help.

an aftermarket hid kit is a tricky thing you need to be careful when installing as it can lead to malfunctioning in LM.

How did you repair faulty LM??

I am having the same issue. i had a xenon bulb go out. i replaced the control unit and everything ok apart from my right hand side headlight does not move and i got this cornering light failure.

Replacing the stepper motor controllers
The following calibrations must be performed after a stepper motor controller has been replaced:
- Vehicle identification number encoded in the stepper motor controller (with the BMW diagnosis system).
- Encode the stepper motor controller to match the headlight.
Important: The stepper motor controllers must be encoded.

If the stepper motor controller is not calibrated to the vehicle data, the adaptive headlights will not work.

it also says

Important: Encode the SMC after replacing a headlight!
After a bi-xenon headlight has been replaced, the stepper motor controller (SMC) must be recoded according to the
headlight data.
This is because the range of movement of the headlight and the installation location of the position sensor may vary from
vehicle to vehicle. The new bi-xenon headlight may have a different hardware number to that of the old one.
The headlight type pin must correspond with the SMC encoding. This calibration is performed during encoding.

The adaptive headlights will not work if the stepper motor controller is not recoded.

i have read on the forums to reflash the light module LMA, 2LSMC and 2RSMC with ncsexpert
recoding the 2LSMC,2RSMC and LMA and send blank .man files to all.

but i always get the code COAPI-2020 only when i am sending the man file whether blank or not to the 2LSMC,2RSMC but the coding completes with lma.

please help

About a month i just studied the schematic of the LM and measured the different components. Until i found the bad chips and replaced them.

It is not necessarily need to encode the SMC's. Just install the left one in the left headlight and the right in the right one. When encode, you enable them as master and slave.
And also the LM is working without encoding. But you may have more or less options on your car and they will not work.
But the adaptive headlights will work without encoding.

can you remember which chips you have replaced part numbers or something? i have a faulty LM with faulty cornering lights i know it is LM (no communication in LIN-BUS) but don't know where to look at. it is shame to throw it away as it is cost a bit of money by the way the part number is 9203082 which i believe has all options.
