So can anyone confirm that on an M-car, the rev-limiter kicks in variably as well? (In other words, does the limiter follow the red line?) Andy, does a non-M car with M gauges cause the rev limiter to become variable?

That's a good question Rudy. Never tried it , as I'm very careful with the revs the first few miles - but will give it a go at some stage...

On my 04 545iA the the tach did not go past those white lines when the engin was cold. It was a long time ago and I only did it once so I don't remenber if the gear selector was in M or DS. But I do distinctly recall the tach did not exceed the white lines( ie go to redline) before the engine was warmed up.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying here, all I can say is if your car's limiter kicked in at the variable white bars, it would be the only one in the world, based on the collective information gathered here over the years...

If you install the ACM unit you can get to a menu that shows some basic car values. One of them is the coolant temperature.
Apperantly the collant temp is part of the CAN bus data. I wait with demanding a lot from the car untill the coolant has reached 94 celsius (I know it takes the oil a litle longer to reach the apropriate temperature but the coolant is a good indicator).

My recollection of the collective information is the observations came from SMG and 6MT cars, no Autos chimed in. But it doesn't really matter, I was just reporting what I observed.

Rudy,

This morning I had my tranny in M mode and the limiter kicked in prior to the variable white bars. It upshifted about 500 rpm prior to the white bars. I didn't get a chance to redline it in DS mode as my commute to work is quite short.

Interesting, I'll try it on the M5 cluster as well, I'm guessing it will have the same outcome.

Thanks,

You really can't test the rev-limiter with an automatic because it will upshift. I'm talking about the hard limiter that you can only hit if you're in an SMG, a manual tranny, or redline in 6th gear of an automatic...

I can confirm that with the M5 the rev limiter corresponds to the lower rpm during warm up - you can not rev past the redline, which increases as the car warms.

I didn't know for sure, but thanks to this post I was inspired to leave my office and take may car for a spin to verify....just another benenfit of the e60 forum.
