Default Which coolant for N52?

Hello,

Just wondering what type of coolant should I get. Car is 2006 525i N52 engine. I can't tell what color the existing coolant is. Can you guys recommend one that I can get from Autozone or O'Reilly auto?

Thanks!

Go to the local BMW dealer and get it there. You are going to pay like $5 more at BMW for the recommend stuff than what you can get at Autozone.

Dealer is usually the best since a gallon has a pretty high weight, and if you do a full drain of the block you will usually need 2 gallons.

It just depends how far you live from the dealer and what the local tax is. Sometimes after you figure your time, gas and tax over the dealer price it is just as cheap to have it shipped right to your door.

And if you do go mail order and are a DIY don't forget to throw in filters, etc as the shipping will be free.

While I agree with the above suggestions, if I may...
Zerex G05 is equivalent to BMW coolant. NAPA stores sell them for around $17 or so. You will need to get a gallon of distilled water and mix 50/50. If you have a NAPA store around where you live, you have this option.

Nice find. Good to know, especially if you get caught out of town and low on coolant.
Didn't see a BMW approval on their spec sheet, but I did see Mercedes, and BMW always parallels fluid approval closely with Mercedes so good enough for me.

What is the difference between BMW coolant vs your typical 50/50 found at any auto parts store?

OEM coolant is really the way to go. I noticed you live in LA, I can't imagine the dealer is very far from you. Make sure you mix it 50/50 with distilled water; the OEM coolant isnt pre-mixed.

Many contain phosphates. Your BMW really doesn't like phosphates.

Ya, after posting I did some research. Just need to see if my local independent dealers carry since there are no BMW dealers within 50 miles from me.

Looks like the Vavoline Zerex G-05 mentioned above is a good alternative and liked by many on the forums if it comes down to purchasing local or not...

Your car will be absolutely fine with Zerex G05. Don't think it's an inferior product, it's same as BMW coolant.
