Hey Guys,

Got a message that my cars coolant level is low. So I read the manual and checked it and indeed it's quite low.

So the question is, should I use any joeblow antifreeze to top it off or should I get the BMW coolant? BMW Coolant I found in the accessories catalog for $17.95 a gallon. I have a gallon of old antifreeze in my garage -- I think its been there for maybe 5 or 10 years atleast, so I'm not sure if I want to use it.

Ironically I called the dealer yesterday and they told me my wooden center trim will be released from the warehouse on Dec 20th so on the 21st they should have it and I can pickup the coolant then, or should I just use the old stuff?

Lomag - had this a couple times with the M5, I spent the $$ on the BMW coolant and then always had some for future use. Used it on the M5 later and the X5.

Cheers

Lomag,

Make sure you use the correct coolant color for your E60, otherwise you could possible do some damage and void the warranty. To be safe, I would say its a good idea to only use coolant recomded by the OEM.

I found some interesting reading on this topic (isn't google wonderful?):

Got the same message yesterday. Was wondering the same thing and was going to post later today. I don't have anything to offer, except for the same question.

Just forget the warranty for a moment, Lomag... WHY do you want to put some OLD stuff, that might not work anymore, in your NEW luxury sedan?
Don't start saving money in the wrong places, my .02 cent.

Ya, that's what I figure. Since I have to go to dealer anyway this comming Tuesday or Wednesday I'll pickup a gallon of bmw coolant there. So i'll have it for the future if needed too.

We got this warning quite early.. and it turned out the water pump had to be replaced :) Might be an ok idea to get it checked out at your dealer.

Why concern yourself about cost or brand, the coolant is covered under your free maintaince. You should be able to stop by the dealer and ask them to top it off while you wait.

Since you're going to the dealer why not make them put some in? Hahah or ask them for a bottle "under warranty" and you can fill it up yourself. :D
