Yesterday 11-30-2010 my 04 bmw 545i (94500 miles) overheated. (The low coolant icon popped up) so being stuck i attempted to add water. As i was doing so, i instantly noticed the water pouring out from possibly the water pump (the location was on the front of the motor, kind of in the middle)...based on that, does it sound like a major issue? Thanks for any help and i had my car towed to an indy bmw shop to be looked at. I just want to know what to expect, thanks again.

Water pump most likely, hopefully you did not damage a head gasket, otherwise big $$$$$

Water pump leaks are usually more gradual in discharge. I suspect you blew a hose.

Water pump replacement cost? I hope it is just a hose...i actually purchased mechanical breakdown coverage from mercury, and it says the water pump is covered if maintenance is up to date, but when do you maintain your water pump? Thanks guys.

Expect to pay about $1,500 for water pump, tensioner, and temp sensor. If you are at 95,000 miles you are definitly living on borrowed time if that is the original pump. Mine went out at 65,000 miles, which appears to be about the normal life span on a 545.

I just talked to the shop (Phaedrus in SF) and they told me the water pump went out, costing about 950.00 Good news though, the mechanical breakdown coverage will cover 800.00 of it and i will be coming out of pocket for the rest which is a thermostat and some other bits and pieces that the shop recommended to change out...phew, what a relief guys...i highly recommend mercury insurance mechanical breakdown coverage for any used BMW...saved my a$$ lol
