As I understand it, without convenient access when the key is actually in the ignition lock the key fob battery is recharged. But from some reading I've done here on the forum it sounds like the battery in the fob for convenient access does not recharge and must be occasionally replaced?

According to my manual (2008 535i) - the battery in the FOB with convienence access does NOT recharge. As a matter of fact, I just put brand new batteries in both mine and my wife's remotes last week. Uses the standard CR2032 size (I bought like 25 of them on ebay for $5 - I use these things in all kinds of devices). You can pick up a single at your local retail store for about $5 each, but I figure that even if the ebay ones don't last as long, it is still a much better value.

First, sorry for the misnomer; I of course meant comfort access.
Second, thanks for the info. Maybe that is why I can only get one fob to keep the satellite radio presets. Maybe that battery is getting low.

I love the disinformation out there, at my LOCAL dealer (not the one I actually deal with regularly) the gal there insisted that you MUST insert the fob regularly to "Charge" it! There's yet ANOTHER reason I don't do business with them regularly!

Did you get the owner's manual with your car? If not, you can d/l PDF version from the BMW site for free w/o any registration.

Yes I got the manuals, still going through them learning everything. I read that the non comfort access key fobs recharge but I didn't see anything that stated the comfort access didn't. I saw how to replace the battery and I guess I should have realized that meant they don't recharge.

Unless you are setting the memory or need to 'park' your keys on a trip you never need to take the fob out of your pocket when you have CA. For those members with warranty, the batteries are even covered under the OEM warranty.

This is a "Fact" if you have CA your remote battery will not charge if you insert it into the Slot! CA FOB sends TX and RX signal via proximity sensor and for that to operate properly the battery is higher in V rating Vs the FOB without the CA!
