So can someone clear this up for me? I just ordered a roll of shadowline trim. When I did a search on the topic, most of them are referring to actual "parts" that were bought and swapped out. I mean, they bought window trims. They "removed" the chrome trim and put in the black trim.

I was under the impression that you basically buy a roll of black trim and tape it over the chrome. Am I totally off?

Both are correct. There are actual black trim parts that can be used to replace the chrome but folks have also used the tape as a cheaper alternative. The OEM black trim from the factory is not simply tape covered chrome...

Got it. I didnt even know that you could buy actual replacement trim. I'm sure it's a lot more than $20 I just spent for my roll of trim.

Not easy. You have to be really patient.

I did the tape at first. In the end I ended up getting OEM matte black trim. All 8 pieces are about $240 and easily installed.

Balbs: why did you end up getting trims? Did the tape peel? Did it not look good? Bubbled? Did it start to come off after awhile?

It wasn't durable enough. It didn't peel and I took my time installing it (best to take the trim off the car and install) and there weren't any bubbles. The problem was my kid was checking it out one time and ran his fingernail on it. It left a permanent fingernail line or marring on it. While you can't see it from 10 feet away, I see it everytime I walked closer to the car and it bugged me.

It just sucks that it's over $200 for some cheap pieces of plastic. It'd be sweet if someone would just spend the time to make a replica of this that fit right and sell it for $40 or $50. Once fitment is verified..producing it couldn't be too difficult. Of course I am just talking and not 'doing' but oh well.

@balbs Where did you order your trim pieces from? The dealership?
