I crashed my 2006 530xi with Xenon adaptive headlights, and found a pair for a good deal from a 2004 car. However the ballast for the 2004 car is different from mine. Does anyone know whether I can simply install the 2004 lights and ballast in my 2006 car with no wiring or coding issues? Thank you!

Have you researched part numbers? Realoem.com is a good place to check that between the two cars.

You should be able to. They just updated the ballast system. Or just get the ballast off the old lights and install them. Only do this car if both lights are adaptive lights

i believe the bulb and HID system is different.
the older ones are D2S and the newer ones are D1S. You could double check the HID bulbs and compare between the two...
I think you can't use your existing electronic but you should be able to use the complete HID electronics from the older pre-LCI lamps.

Im not seeing where the bulb sizes matter being that they are plugged in from the inside of the light assembly. I do not see where the computer sees if they are D2S or D1S it sees if the light is actually working. But who knows I would say try it but its not my money. If the pinout is the same to the headlight it will work which it should be.

Thanks to each of you for your thoughts on this. Because of the conflicting information on various sites, I wasn't able to determine that the lights with the older D2S ballasts would work without coding issues. I did learn that the housings are a bit different to accommodate for the slightly different way that the D1S is mounted. In the end, I decided to spend a bit more and maybe save myself a headache.

Hi CortHoward
The Xenon headligts from the 2004 will for sure fit on your 2006 E60/61 ( born with Xenon headlights ) , the connectors are similar , ther is a different type of ballast and the bulb is a D1S type , but it do not have any influenze . !
No coding needed.
First from 03/2007 the connector is different on the headlight housing , and can therfore not be used directly , ( can if you alter the connector of course
