Unhappy

Hi,

Some more sound problems

When I'am starting my car up (520i) in cold weather with a cold engine, I get a rattle sound from the engine. It is difficult to describe the sound other then a rattle. The sound is at it's peak just when the car has started and resides high for 2 sec. After that I can just hear a low rattle sound for 2-3 minutes until the engine sounds normal.

Anyone heard off, or had this issue before?

Thanks..

sounds like a common issue.
I had it on my 530i but I am not sure if it's a same problem they had with 530i
take it to the dealer and they will fix it.

Is it possible that the sound could be coming from the hydraulic tappets (lifters)?
It is not unusual that the valvetrain can rattle for a while at startup caused by oil drainage from the tappets. The sound will disappear as soon as the hydraulic tappets are filled up with oil again.

my 2 cents

I have similar issue... it has only happened twice on my 530i (yesterday and today). It was around 30 degrees F. I heard the same noise on my 330i when I left the car outside overnight when it was very cold out. I hope it goes away or to the dealer I go...

I had the same problem 6 months ago. I brought it to the dealer to get it fixed.
I think it was because of the belt, but I'm Not sure though..
Good Luck

I have the same problem. I'm somewhat glad to hear that someone else has the same issue. Should I inform my dealer?

I had the same problem for some time - it is best described as an a rotational rough noise immediately after the engine cranks. I believe they had a puma on this one.

I managed to simulate the same noise (mine sort of happens intermittently) to the service engineer and he immediately faulted the starter motor. It was promptly changed and the noise is gone for now
