I adjusted the climate controls via iDrive so that they offered maximum heating and was greeted by a distinct lack of warm air.

What exactly did you adjust via iDrive? In my experiences, if you leave things set to full auto and simply adjust the temperature dials up or down, you'll have total comfort and you won't have any fogged windows, etc. As soon as you override any of the automatic settings, you prevent the car from doing what it needs to do to maintain things the way it was designed to...
The car is outside now and will be back to a solid -14C by lunch - perfect for doing some tests! I will try the automatic program again at lunch. How long do you think it should take for the heater to be working at 100% capacity if the car is just idling? I was thinking the 5 minutes was a reasonable length of time? Maybe not?
thanks!

I adjusted the heating / cooling bars so that there were four red bars. I tried the automatic settings, but when I checked the climate setting svia iDrive it looked like the auto program was setup to use 2 'red bars'. It was the auto program that fogged and frosted the windows...

The only other thing I forgot to emphasize when I mentioned "full automatic" was that you need to have the air recirculation settting on automatic too. If the recirc is manually set to closed, you'll likely get fogging...

A lot longer than if you just drove it. An idling engine doesn't generate much heat so it would take a long time to get warm. Not very environmental either .
