I am thinking about investing into a cable and software package to allow me to do some coding and programing of my '06 530xi wagon. The question I have is why don't more people do this? It seems like you can do alot FOR your car and also save your self some $$$.

Just one DIY battery replacement and it' s paid for.
CDC, ipod, or AUX coding and it's paid for.

Maybe I am missing something but thought I would see if someone has started down this path before me (I am sure there are a feas of ya out there)

Thanks

definetly do it, but it takes some time to learn it.

I spend my whole day administering all kinds of servers and enterprise applications. By the time I get home the only computer I touch is my daughter's Ipad because its so simple to use. But then I have to deal with home and family.

I just don't have the time or desire. If I was planning on keeping my 5er as long as my Camaro maybe I'd feel different.

Go for it. I got tons of info and help from here: http://www.bmwcoding.com/

Once you get the ball rolling, here is a very useful code list for the E6x:

after the initial set up and learning, it is easy. I can plug in and make a change in just a couple minutes. I will be turning off my headlamp washers for the summer this weekend and it will take just a few minutes of my time.

Best thing I've ever done. I know my cars (3 bmers) inside and out now and being able to do what i want when i want is a +. Been solicited to work for a dealer recently so that too is a plus I guess. lol Money is good but it's almost a 2 hour drive one way so forget that.

Sure it takes time to learn, especially when you have to know multiple cars and multiple modules and the fact that there is an order to do things so you're not being redundant.

pretty straight forward for the IT crowd and requires a bit of learning for the non-techies..not rocket science anyway

invest in a good cable as the OBD2 cable is compatible with pretty much all cars..i would recommend ScanTool OBDLink Bluetooth+USB Cable which I immediately bought after a failed experiment with a cheap cable..using it with both my BMW and Mercedes with no issues at all..happy coding!
