Default Cockpit smells of fumes

After some research I’ve found there could be a possible my manifold has cracked guessing it’s cast..
after reading many different sites on line it states this is common? Any ideas/views on this? Also what manifold is best to use for replacement? I’ve had a look and am guessing the whole head needs to be removed to access the manifold seeing my mate do a turbo on one years ago. Cheers in andvance

I think the Diesel is well known for cracking manifolds. Not sure about Petrols.

My own (E61 525d) had same problem. I noticed it before I bought it - and negotiated a reduction in price as a result.
In my case it was the stock thin stainless doubled walled (none cast) manifold that cracked.

FWIW I replaced it with a heavy wall cast manifold (bought of ebay) - as a temporary measure.
(the casting was a bit rough - not as nice as the BMW item - so, I took a bit of time "porting" it with a die grinder because I'm sad that way)

It was quite a job to fit it - mainly 'cos it's hard to see and reach all the bolts... This fixed the burned diesel smell (at tick-over) in the cabin
It also made a small but noticeable reduction in turbo threshold (i.e. with crack boost arrived about 1400rpm, without crack about 1100rpm - which is better)
The cast manifold was about £100 (uk dollars ;-) delivered.

So far it's worked well enough.
