Default Cluster LCD dimming ?

Hello,

My LCD display is changing too much with the ambient light.

I have found the phototransistor in the cluster :

Any idea what are its characteristics ? I would like to replace it with a resistance, variable eventually...

Thanks in advance !

What year/model is this? I have not seen any of mine that change dim levels automatically. They are all manually adjusted.

Mine changes with ambient light. The dash manual control also changes it. 2005 545 MT6.

E60, E61, E63, E64, E81, E87, E90, E91, E92, E93 petrol, diesel, M, ... all have a phototransistor and change with ambient light.

The general brigthness can be adjust manually, but the phototransistor works in parrallel.

newTis.info : Dimming of the instrument cluster.
The brightness of the liquid-crystal display and all indicator and warning lights is adapted to suit ambient lighting conditions. This function is implemented by a phototransistor in the instrument cluster.
The brightness signal is calculated in the instrument cluster on the basis of the following values:
  • Signal from the phototransistor (ambient luminosity)
  • Dimmer signal (on the control panel for the lights)
The brightness signal calculated in this way is made available to the other control units via the K-CAN.

Wow... I can't believe this is something I have never noticed. I have my original cluster out of the car, now I want to look for the phototransistor
