Hi all,
2008 535xi, auto trans, 40K miles: when I start the engine I often (more than half the time) hear and feel a significant clunk which seems to come from the rear. It occurs about 1 second or less after the engine starts firing, and only one clunk per start, and it is not always of the same intensity. Dealer consulted BMW Canada and they recommended reprogramming the onboard computer. This was done under warranty, but no improvement. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your input. Would I need to get under the car to check the butterfly? And if the butterfly is loose, do you think it would be heavy enough to cause a tremor in the car when it moves on start-up? It seems to me that the part or parts involved are quite heavy. I know it's hard to understand something like this based on a written description, and I appreciate your comment.

Try a complete reset maybe? Disconnect your battery for about 30mins. It is a long-shot but can't hurt. Besides you may like how the car feels aftwerwards.

Clearly quality control on many BMW vehicles has slipped ... these care may be getting very very very very sophisticated ... but they sure are breaking at an "expensive" rate. Maybe instead of investing $$ s on the newest gizmos, car companies should spend a few more pennies getting the basics done right!
