I returned to my dealer in the Uk, the mechanic had another look with me & agreed that the noise is there, it occurs when a Bosch pump activates every 2 or 3 seconds, this pump is connected into a water hose, just behind the air filter unit, if
you touch it ( mind it gets hot ! ) then you can feel it activate every few seconds. Not quite sure what the pump does, but it only activates when the fan is on & the temperature inside the car reaches the programmed temp. EG if it is doing it at 22 degrees, crank it up to 25 & it will stop until the car reaches 25. In the car you can hear a knock from the ventilation system at that time. You can feel this through the steering wheel or if you touch the middle of the dashboard.
The mechanic was a bit perplexed by this so he found another car in the workshop the same as mine, but brand new. It did the same thing!!!!
Looks like it is an inbuilt problem that I will have to live with. Which is a shame as why make such a brilliant & quiet car & engine with a noisy climate system??

Mine is a Dec 2003 525I, standard climate control in the Uk.

I suspect diesel models & advanced climate models will be completly different, so will not be afflicted with this problem.

That's bad news, because it sounds like there is no fix. Mine is a May 2004 build 545i manual, and it does it. There is no more advanced climate system available, as far as I know. I tested, and mine does it whether the air conditioning button is on or not.

Why don't others on the board hear it, too? My hearing isn't even that good. I hadn't noticed that it only does it when it reaches the selected temperature.

Loud blowers in general are a pet peeve for me. I wish cars had bigger ducts or something, so they could get large air flows without the jet engine sound of a blower on high. Press the windshield defrost button on my 545 and it sounds like you stuck your head out the window in a cruising 727.

Mine is a Aug 2003 520i, advanced climate control, from Spain. I had the same problem and after 4 visits to my dealer they finally found the problem and I have no noise since then.

Oh, good. Thanks. So I will ask the dealer to look at it.

I finally took my car in for this, and the dealer said some X5s had this problem, too. It's an auxiliary water pump for the heating system, and they've replaced some of them on X5s for being too noisy. They're going to change mine, too.

So I'm not crazy (it took the third guy, the head mechanic, to admit there was a problem), and hopefully there's a fix. They'll keep the car overnight to await delivery of a new pump.

I never did get this problem fixed & a loan car did the same thing.
Is this a common problem or is my hearing too sensitive!.
In UK Top Gear magazine they have a 525 on long term test & they have noticed this problem too.

my previous E60 did have a funny noise that was only audible until the desired temp was reached (or thats how it seemed) after that the noise would go. noise was only detecable if you had stereo off obviously

it was a kind of low pitched hum noise that would pulse every few seconds during the first 10-15 minutes of driving then go.

in my new E60 i have to say so far the a/c system is totally silent and no unexpected noises to report.

If anyone gets this fixed at the dealer, please do let us know how much the cost of such repair is. My '04 545i does it too and its really annoying.

Thanks.

sorry to revive an old thread. I am hearing this finally on my 2004 530i. Dealer said it was the bosch pump as someone else had pointed out. But replacing with a new one reduced the noise only slightly. Did anyone else's service guy figure out a better solution?

Hi,

I have this noise on my 530d and have substantially reduced it by jamming some padding between the rubber holder for the pump and the car body metalwork. Actually used a rolled up padded eyeshade from a recent flight that I just happend to have in the car. Don't really know what made me try it, but the noise was annoying me and although it is not elegant, it seems to work on my car at least.
