Have you got the automatic cooling option set? It allows the fan to come on to vent hot air from the car at timed intervals. This may be why the it is coming on seemingly at random...

I have the same problem. The automatic vent setting is off. It comes on when I accelerate hard, go over a bump, or sometimes without any reason at all. Did you find a solution? Thinking about taking it in and having them check it out, but it's not very easy to reproduce, being it happens so randomly. I also noticed that I can turn my fan on just by touching the silver dial (temp) closest to the driver. I dont have to turn it to turn on the fan. All I have to do is touch it, sometimes i'll accidently graze it when I turn down the radio and the fan will come on. Is that normal?? Thanks and good luck

The e39 and e 46 has constant issues. Some resistor that went bad. My dad had it 4 times now and a friend 3 times. Maybe its still the same issue in the e60?

I started experiencing this same issue when the weather got warm and I wanted the windows down and turned off the ventilation system. The system would just turn itself on. So I took the car into the dealer for some good ol fashion troubleshooting. I don't know why I expected them to return it to me and say "We fixed your problem!", but to my dismay they said they found nothing. Another service advisor suggested the Automatic setting, which I lowered but the problem still persisted. I'm taking it in for a software upgrade maybe that will solve the problem.
