OP, just out of curiosity did you ever check the battery sometimes the strap gets loose and the battery slides in the compartment causing a noise when driving. The bearing if it is one don't need lube cause its constantly getting lubed while the diff. is turning. What it can damage is your camber angle and mess up your tire and can really damage the axle shaft. Hope this helps. Cheers

It may sound goofy but sounds can seem to be coming from one place but actually are from another. Check under the seats - esp the rear seat cushion (sometimes things get loose and clang against metal parts.). Move to the trunk, under the well where the spare and other stuff is ... try the tool holder on the trunk lid, too. Then, behind the trunk side and rear light partitions. Check under the hood - one mechanic once left me s nice 8mm snap-on wrench there! And under the car too - for broken hangers and other fasteners. Last, but not least - check for a snapped motor mount screw [actually more like a 1/2" bolt]. I've learned this is a common failure - the motor may not move about since there are a few of these securing the engine and transmission. Mine was discovered when it fell from the flap lowered for an oil service. It too made a clanging noise when it rolled around under the car bouncing against some other metal parts.
