Cigaretter Lighter won't pop up

When i was putting in a iphone fm adaptor the cigarette lighter broke in that it no longer automatically pops up when you move the cover back. it is just lying flat in the socket. Can this be fixed? and how?

I actually plugged my gps into my lighter and pushed down to hard and the whole thing broke off and pushed down into the cubby hole.you could see the 2 wire leads of the lighter and then the carpet. had to take it to the dealer for then to rip the dash apart to fix it.ol theres a little spring that attches to the sliding hinge theres no way your gonna get ur fingers in there to put it back together. this was under warranty for me i said the thing just broke when i slid the cig. door open

I know it can be fixed - my dealer broke mine while cleaning my car, I returned it and they fixed it. Not sure what they did, but my receipt said "reattach springs"

I fixed mine myself as others on this forum have as well. Look up the DIY. the spring just popped off the little pin that keeps it wound. Takes about 20 minutes total to fix. The hard part is getting a torx driver at the back two screws. I used a bit and a wrench. It is a FREE fix and my dealer wanted 180$ EVEN UNDER WARRANTY. Thanks Bob Smith!
Also my lighter power didn't work before and after giving it a good brushing with steel wool while it was out, it works great. Very satisfying and at the right price!

Lift off the iDrive knob. Prize up the trim panel.
Unscrew the ashtray complete - the forward 2 screws are a pig to do without taking the vertical trim off, but a screwdriver bit, spanner and patience will do the trick.

The vertical piece of trim thats preventing you from getting at the front screws just pops off. with that out of the way you can remove the other 2 torx bolts and take out the whole cigarette socket. i had to make a spring for mine, it went missing when the lighter was broken, but i did find loads of change down there so its not all bad.
