Lets say your wife hypothetically backs into someone on accident.
Alls well but you are left w/ a bumper that went through that shock of contracting & reexpanding.
Now the paint hasnt come up, but its chipped up (still in place) with a lot of veins.

What temporary action can I take to keep the paint from flaking off the bumper prior to bumper replacement?

post some pics of the damage, maybe a mobile bumper repair service can do some "patchwork" to hold you over..


some pdr services also do minor bumper repair as well...

I think some kind of resin in combination with pull rods... try check Wurth products...

If you are going to replace it, then I would do no more than just throw a little touch up paint it the damage. Spending any money on it would not make a lot of sense, unless you are planning to wait a long time, then I guess what you do would be relevant to the time you need to wait. Once the paint separates from the bumper surface there is nothing you can do to keep the paint on the bumper. Maybe find a big decal...?

Keep the bumper and hang it over your bed - replace the car ... send your wife away for retraining :dance:

I'm not sure if Home Depot still carries it, but you could try a product called "Rejuvinate" that is made for flooring. It's a low grade polyurethane clearcoat mix that isn't as harsh as a full poly. I used it on a matte plastic motorcycle gas tank, and it worked well for filling the imperfections in the plastic and giving a slight gloss. It goes on easy with a rag and would seal against any additional flaking until you get the bumper repaired. In all weather conditions, I typically had to reapply about once every 2-3 months.
