check break fluid ???

My Ride: 05" 545i 6 speed

On my system data is says check break fluid,
does anyone know where i check that, and if i can do it myself. and what kind of break fluid do i buy?? only oem?

The brake master cylinder is mounted on the firewall.

Brake fluids should not be mixed ... there are several different types that are specified for different cars. (Mere) brake pad wear will result in a drop in fluid level - but it may also be a symptom of a leak in the brake system. But that may be beyond your mechanical competency. Additionally, brake fluid changes are recommended every 2 years.

And, without knowing the year and model of your e60 it's probably something you should have a mechanic look at.

I would use oem stuff just to be on the safe side.
It dose not cost that much.
I change my a few months ago by my local workshop it cost about $55us in HK.

In the US, brake fluid is replaced every two years under the maintenance plan. You don't indicate a location in your profile, which might be a good thing to do. Brake fluid tends to absorb water (I think that's called hydrophillic), thus subjecting the entire system to possible corrision from within if the fluid isn't replaced.
