I just sold a 2002 Audi S4. Although it is smaller than a A6 I can tell you it was a great car. In nearly 60000 miles it was a pleasure to drive and problem free.

Yeah the S4 is a completely different thing altogether though, much smaller and handles 10x better, and one of the best Audis ever.

Then realised because of the shocking residuals on the Audi 3.0Tdi Q a 535d is actually ?200 a month cheaper too, and the 535d sport just trounces the 3.0tdi s-line in every department. So ended up with a 535d and DMS's it!

I also looked at Audi before deciding to go with another E60. Bottom line the Audi, like the Lexus GS, is "nice". If "nice" is what you want to spend your good money on go for it. It will forever be "nice". Not fun to drive or great to look at, just "nice".

Great point on residuals! BMW's definitely have the edge in retaining value.
The best residual value I could get on a 3.0Tdi Quattro S-Line Avant, with Nav and a few toys coming in at ?42k was ?11,800 after 48 months and 60,000 miles. Compare this with a 6 month old 535d sport touring which after 48 months and 80,000 miles and they were offering ?21k which I think says alot.
My 2004 A6 sport avant with leather, auto, Nav+, 18" alloys was ?34k new, and after 21 months I sold it for ?16,000. I bought it 18 months old so didn't actually loose anything on it thank god, but just shows how much they do loose, it was a diesel avant as well, which are meant to be the best Audis (after cabs) for holding their value.
If you do get one buy it 3-6 months old, you can get one with all the toys for around ?33k if you barter hard.

you dig a pitch for yourself! three good friends of my dad bought also an A6. they didn't drive it more than 20,000 km. cylinder head seal (sry if it isn't the right word) broke down on two of them. the third one went back to dealer because of discontent.

OK, maybe I am comparing cars with completely different engines than yours - but still.
Before I bought my E60 520d the only other car I was considering was A6 2.0tdi.
I drove the test car for the weekend and thus my thoughts:
- VW/Audi diesels are noisy as tractors, once I drove 520d I couldn't believe these are both diesels - I would bet I'm in a normal car
in terms of noise!
- Audi A6 in the comparable version (S-Line in place of my M-package) was just about 5K EUR more than my E60!
- Audi (at least in Luxembourg) offers those "strange" pre-configured sets of options only. So, if you want just xenons, leather and folding seats (as you can order in BMW with no problem at all) - forget it, you will end up paying extra for the whole package of other stuff..
In the opposite corner however I would put the customer care / service / after-sale support which at BMW is just... horrible - and as my friends who recently bought Audis or VWs here just claim to be their best car-experience ever...
Well...
