I was cruising around two days ago and I got the alert for a loose gas cap. I tightened it after two driving cycles (car on & off), and it has yet to come back. However, my CEL (check enigne light) is now on but I'm not sure when it actually came on because the steering wheel blocks my view of it. I had the car at the dealer on Saturday, so I'm sure that it wasn't on then.
Would the loose gas cap trip the CEL? I have no service messages or alerts in the iDrive.
Thanks

CEL light will be triggered when the gas cap is loose (on all OBD-II compliant cars).
After tightening the gas cap, the CEL will go away after SEVERAL drive cycles (I am not sure exactly how many drive cycles it is). If you have a OBD-II code reader, you can RESET the CEL. Or, you can take the car to auto parts places (like AutoZone), they will RESET the light.

The guys at my detailer left the gas cap slightly loose which triggered the CEL. I left it alone for a few days, I can't really remember how long, but it didn't go away so I ended up reseting it with my Bavarian technic diagnostic tool.

my gas cap warning pops up once in a while when my tank is full, even though my cap is tight. but the warning goes away, and the check engine light never comes on.

Returning the car on lemon law because CEL is on (due to loose gas cap)? There is more to that story than just loosening the gas cap and going back to the dealer and saying I want to return the car per Lemon-law because my CEL is on. Car may be qualified under lemon-law if the dealer can't fix the problem after REPEATED attempts.

I get the gas cap warning from time to time but never get the CEL with it. The gas cap warning goes away within a few minutes and usually only happens after a fill up... again no CEL though.

I checked the code this AM, and it was for "small evap system leak." So...gas cap.
I reset it and am once again driving with no CEL.
thx guys

The check engine light doesn't go away IMMEDIATELY after the cap is tightened. The CEL will go away after x number of drive cycles. If you don't want to wait until it resets itself after those many drive cycles, you can reset it with OBD-II code reader.
