I have read on this forum that the CD Changer on the E60 was not MP3 capable. Yesterday I burnt a CDR with some MP3 tracks, as an experiment, and the changer reads them and plays them perfectly. It doesn't display track titles, so with a disc full of tracks some searching is required to find a particular track, but it certainly enhances the usefulness of the multichanger.

My car is a 520d SE March 08 build.

Have you written the mp3s as an audio cd and not data? As thats what mine does with audio cds. If they are still mp3s you should get about 9 or 10 albums on each cd. My Car built last March will not play mp3s.

Also if they are mp3s how does the system seem to deal with folders?

Not to sound too skeptical but I'll believe this when I see it. Methinks the disc isn't a true MP3 disc but rather an audio disc as Dandle suggests...

Given your comments I will check tonight that the files were burnt as MP3 and that the burning programme hasn't simply converted them to an audio cd. I have to say I was in a rush, so I didn't look at the file types on the disc after they had been burnt.

The reason I tried, given all the information on this forum that it was not possible, was because several people on another forum are claiming that MP3s are being read by their multi changers.

Just checked on the other forum I mentioned and the guy who is playing MP3s has an E90 rather than an E60. Does anyone know whether the E90 has a different multichanger. I had assumed that BMW would use a standard changer across the range, but maybe not.

Hard to say -- it'll be easier if you pop your disc into your computer and see what kind of files are on it...

Yes, I believe the E90 and other BMW models were equipped with a changer that could be used with MP3 CDs.

I'm with Rudy - I don't think the hardware in the E60 is currently capable. There was a document making the rounds 2 years ago that had a matrix that outlined the capabilities of the various cars. This document should support what is being said here.

I am surprised when i read this and found it pathetic that bmw still dont have this option standard like for example opel which plays mp3 in the single slot cd player. also usb should be standard. And why the difficulties of burning a cd the most common playback files should be supported.
that is what i expect with a car of 50000euro. i saw this commercial of cadillac which have standard 80 gb hdd in the car.

wel enough complainments goodluck with your mp3 playback

The document actually doesn't support the current situation -- it originally specified that the E60 would support MP3 discs in the changer as of 3/2007 production but that never happened...

Your right. I put my CD in the computer and they are audio files. The burn programme had taken the MP3 files and converted them to audio files. Damn.
