For those of us not getting premium sound, does anyone know if the BMW supplied 6cd changer is the only one which integrates properly into the iDrive system? The dealer here wanted a silly amount of money ($800-$900 IIRC) for the 6cd changer, and I can't find any "real" cost (either invoice or MSRP) for it.

I decided to get Premium Sound package to avoid the installation hassle, but I got several quotes before making the decision.

a BMW Dealer in S. California- around $525, BMW factory CD changer with proper mounting brackets.

a sound shop - BMW factory CD changer - around $450 (don't know if it includes mounting brackets for E60 and installation cost)

same shop - Alpine CD changer (OEM for BMW) - $299 (including installation and adapter). This is a very competitive price. I've seen many ads in the local car magazines for this price.

Can a BMW 6 cd changer from 2001 be wired into the New 5.

I would like to keep my CD changer from my 2001 325.
