Default Catalytic converter change

I own a BMW 520 2004 with around 240k km on the clock. Recently there was a growling noise from the front of the car every time i was taking my foot of the clutch. I went to BMW mechanic and when we lift the car and checked it underneath there weren't any obvious issues. Then he started banging with a hammer the front part of the exhaust and when we hit the converter he diagnosed from the sound that it is the source of the noise and needs changing. So i want to ask if there is indeed a possibility that the catalytic converter has gone wrong because I find it a bit extraordinary and if there is someone here who changed theirs so that he can give any advice on the problem
