Ok so today i parked my car and went into work. When i got out i tried to unlock the car while i was walking towards it.. Nothing happened. So i get all the way to the car, open it with the key and try to start it.. Nothing happened. The starter wouldn't crank, no lights came on, NOTHING. I called my buddy to jump me and the car started after a few seconds but a bunch of errors came on.

Engine Malfunction Reduced Power
Active Steering Malfunction
Cruise Control Malfunction
Drive Control System drive moderately.

While i was sitting there waiting for it to heat up it would rev itself every other second. The arrow would go up and down and rev the car. Is this normal? After a while most of the errors went away but im scared its gonna happen again. Im gonna go check my battery tomorrow. Any advice? Anyone have this happen to them? What was the problem? What was repaired? How much did it cost? Thanks

PS: My car was low on gas.. i dont know if that matters.

Sounds like the cold snap caused a marginal battery to fail. When temps dip into the 20's battery capacity drops like a rock. Is it possible you left something turned on when you parked it the combination of the two may have done ya in

Have you ever replaced your alternator and/or battery before?

Also whats your mileage?

I had a somewhat similar situation and am now waiting for the dealer to finish installing my new alternator and run a few tests.

I second this post....My car is at the dealer right now getting a new battery. We had a two day cold spell and each day after work the car would take a few extra cranks to turn over. I just assumed it was because it was about 10 degrees outside and the car had sat all day. The next day though , I had the radio on for about a minute or so before starting the car and behold the low battery indicator followed by everything went dead. Had to get jumped. It's be in the 40s since and the car started fine 5 or 6 times since, but I'm not taking any chances. (I've been stranded enough with my SMG issues of late)

I've had my battery for 5 years and two months and the advisor said that was about average. Now don't get me started on BMW only batteries, battery regiratration and the total cost....Be prepared unless you are willing to take the aftermarket battery chances. $340+tax is the normal price from my dealer.

Ok so by the time i got the car running again (jumped it) it was too late to take it to BMW.. So i stopped by autozone and when the guy was gonna test the battery I found it in a mini water pool The compartment where the batter is in was halfway filled with a mix of water and ice. I was so pissed :S I dont know how water couldve gotten in there since everything else in the trunk is DRY. Im taking it to BMW early tomorrow to get it checked out cus the water could possibly ruin my electrical system :S
