Hey guys, my car has starting shuttering on start up then the check engine light (malfunction) comes on. Once the car warms up i dont have this problem.

Seems like maybe knock/cam sensor or the like or possibly clogged cats to me, but i have been known to be incorrect. have any of you experienced something similar before i start throwing money at it?

edit: car is a 2004 automatic 545i 100k miles

Based on the miles you have I'd recommend changing these relatively easy and inexpensive part: The pressure regulating valves.

page 4 has the pics. Good luck

I'm not so sure if this is something you can get at any autoparts store. I guess it wont hurt to try. Your nearest dealer should have these in stock.

Same thing was happening with my 2005 545i and it was throwing codes 1327 and 0303. After much forum research I was forced to buy a coil at the stealer after watching how to check your coils on Youtube. Very easy and saved me from buying a lot of extra parts like a knock sensor. At first I took it to the stealer and after two days they said it was because my airbox clamps were missing, two of them and there was a vacumm leak. They are correct, however this would not cause your car to shudder and die. I replaced my coil in cylinder #3 as my OBDII code reader had stated and the car runs awesome. The stealer still got me because I had to purchase the part right away $77. Way too expensive. You can find them online and at Autozone or Kragen but it may take three to four days and they run between $30-$44 a piece. These forums are awesome and I have learned so much more here than the stealer. Change your plugs, coils, and vacuum hoses and you should be good. Maybe your CCV if you live in cold region or drive short miles. You can clean the valve pressure seals pretty easy or if torn replace.

Added note: It took me longer to find my battery than it did to change the coil. Your battery is located in your trunk passenger side behind the insulation panel. Unplug black negative cable before working on your car.
