We went to BM dealer on Sunday check out a new e90 for my wife ..
Really like the way the shape has gone apart from the almost Audi v cut from the kidney grills down to the bumper lip.. if you paint it black sort of resembles an A4.... So we priced up a 325 in plain black with beige leather elec sports seats, 18" alloys (with damn runflats), sports suspension, enhanced speaker system, 6cd, xenons, and other "gadgets", final price.. no dealer discount to be had was 31,000gbp .. but i think this feels pricey compared to the E46's.

Also i am sure the dealerships invite you so they can roll out it's good 2nd hand stock for the day in the areas it knows are your vulnerabilities.. mine is Mcars.. and sat there in the lot for the slightly less money + haggling ability was a shiny late 2002 m5 in silver being sold with 12m tax, 12 mth warranty, fmdsh, 17,000 miles + every toy off the ticklist... spent most of Sunday evening and tonight explaining why owning an M5 would be "good for the kids" (why not try this at home, there is not a single excuse that fits that argument) (nothing to do with the fact i can get to use this of course)

So after a bitter struggle i appear to have talked her around and we intend to go haggle on Wendesday.. So any of you out there had an E39 M5 ?? any warnings to offer b4 we dive in.. Running costs not the issue as it will only cover approx 7k per year so i expect 1 service every 12mths + a set of tyres every 24-36mths

I realise this is the E60 forum not the E39 forum but i tend to think that if you own one currently your not going to highlight the problems.. because chances are you are on the forums because your an enthusiast and actualy do like the cars...

Well Mac.... I own both vehicles and stop reading this if you don't want my opinion to screw you up.

The E60 is a better car than the E39 M5 in EVERY category. In fact, the "Blue Lightning" is pretty much collecting dust in the garage since our 545i SMG arrived.

The 2 points to the M5 in my book are:
1) Power: the S62 BMW M-Power is ALOT of raw strength.
2) It will still be an M5 20 yrs from now (albeit an old one)

The E60 is clearly a superior vehicle then the old E39. From the Active Headlight, Active Suspension, Active Steering, SMG, Logic 7 Stereo to the Larger cabine, lighter GVW as well a much improved Navigation system. You can't blame me for perfering the new 5 series.

That is all I have to say about that....

BUT!! Since this is her car... by all means... GET it!! Its just an extra toy car so you can drive on the weekend mate!!

I agree. Although I can not vouch for owning an M5, I was faced with the same decision because back in the beginning, it took me a while to get used to the E60 design over the E39.

All the points about the adhancements are correct. I love the headlights turning into a corner and the active roll.

I would like to further add that I think the E60 with active roll rides nicer than the E39 - based on driving two of my buddies 540's. Seems smoother on the highway and corners better. Also, there is more rear passenger leg room (important if you have kids like me) and 25% more trunk room.

Not to mention, the E60 is the new design. You will be driving a new looking car for the next 5-6 years. The E39 M5, although a great looking car and turns my head like a chick in a Bikini, will look like a used car.

Errr I think he is comparing E90 vs E39 not E60 vs E39..

If it was me I would get E90. E39 M5 has a very outdated interior/exterior. Get it if you want to take the kids to soccor practice REALLY fast.

E90 has more technology and looks and probably feels more appealing than E39 m5. But im basing these opinions on E90 from what I have read about the car....

Simple.

Well.. the E39 m5 and e90 have both been scratched form the list.. All the time i invested in convincing my wife that an M5 was good for her day to day car have gone down the pan...

She wants a non BMW 4 seat coupe.. so no doubt i will be trolling round MB, Audi etc all bl00dy weekend.

She kept seeing e39 3.0 sports and thought the m5 looked too much like the sport !
Also she has previously owned an e46 323ci so decided a change would be good.

Yeah .. bummer...

I have tried reasononing and even showed her a 6 series but she will not budge..
I also think there is a bit of green eyed jealousy going on as one of her friends has a CLK55 which she really likes.. but because her friend has one she won't buy one....

We are going to see a 3 year old CL600 with 17k miles on the clock at weekend.. .. never driven one so looking forward to that... but on the downside it is 7000gbp more than the e90 or the e39 m5.. on the good side it is loaded with toys.. looks to have most options + AMG type 770 alloys.. nice..

Also, under duress, going to take a peek at a 3 year old maserati 3200 coupe with 15,000 on the clock.. i'm not too keen on this one as i think they are fragile.. but worth a look as it is 8,000gbp cheaper than the MB and is v cute..
