hey guys, just picked up an 07 550i two days ago!! Been surfing the forums over the last two days and this place is great! Anyways, my question is concerning the autodimming functions on the rearview mirrors. Is there any way to adjust the darkening, or turn it off completely, other than taping up the sensors? I prefer to be able to get as much light as possible to make out the highway patrol. BTW im in Cali, so my e60 would be a US model if that makes a difference.

If you cover the rear-facing sensor, you should stay bright all the time. Don't cover the forward facing sensor, that'll only make the mirror think it's darker out than it really is...

Tint your windows with a tint film dark enough to trick the sensors, and the rear view mirror and side mirrors should stop darkening themselves. The tint reduces the glare coming from headlights, thus preventing the sensor(s) from being triggered.....and presto.....no more dark mirrors!!!!!

Good Luck.

Yeah, except that wouldn't the tint cause the same problem as 550Steve is having? Either the mirror is dark and the windows are clear or the mirror is clear and the windows are dark -- either way, it would make it harder to spot the troopers, right?

I would buy a radar detector if you want to watch out for cops! well worth the money, never got a ticket with a radar detector. "knock on wood"

You US guys get it so easy.

Pay up the few bucks and keep driving - that's it isn't it?

Isn't that too late? Or do they use a kinda "civilian" speed measurement system with a 30ft range?
