Hi all,

I searched the board to no avail. Many posters agree that the 5's windows, front and rear, freeze up easily. Okay. But the front wipers stink in the snow/ice. I put valeos on my X5 and they are okay in the winter. The OEM wipers on the 5 look like they are either Valeos or Bosch Icons. The problem is that the wiper streaks, particularly with the defrost on high. I think the rubber is simply not capable of working in the lower temps and it gets hard. These are "all season" wipers if your read the materials, and they work as well as all season tires do in the snow...which is poorly. So how can I get some good old fashioned winter wipers on this sucker? The stop at the auto parts store was fruitless b/c E60 is not mentioned in any catalogue. The wipers are 24 and 23 inches, but I think the OEM attachment mechanism is why there are no replacement blades available. ANyone got around this?? I just wat to put some soft winter blades on the car.

P.S. the car is an 07' 550 with 3,500 miles so the blades are not worn, and I'm not going to the dealer to get new blades since mine work very well when its not freezing.

Never heard of winter wipers.

"Winter wipers" are cheaper than regular wipers, look ugly because they have a condom-like rubber sheath covering the mechanicals of the wiper arm so they don't get snow and ice in them and most importantly have blades made of softer rubber ideal for colder ambient temps.

My OEM wipers seem to work OK in the wintertime.

They also seem to last much longer than the one I
had on my E39 and E46's.

If it streaks with defrost on high it usually means that the windscreen is very warm and the water evaporates leaving a thin film of salt on the screen which the wipers aren't picking up. A temporary solution is to rinse off with a lot of water. Windscreen washer or rubbing with windscreen cleaners usually doesn't help just creates more streaking. It's like cleaning glasses after standing close to crashing surf.

Which part of your wipers do you think are NOT "winter" (read: rubber clad) wipers? My OEMs on my 04 are still doing a fine job. Based on that, I conclude that these are silicone blades that are encased (so that no metal to allow freezing is exposed).

Given the above, and assuming that yours show no metal either, I would guess that your problem is not from water freezing on metal blade parts and having the formed ice LIFT the blade off of the glass surface. Thus, I'll be interested in what your dealer says.

Cherchez something else.

I also had some trouble with winter performance. I added some P21S windshield wash boost (avail at bavauto) and also treated the blades with 303 wiper treatment (also on bavauto). The combination seems to be doing a great job. Not sure which item to give the credit to, but it works!

Hope this helps.
