My Ride: 535d
Hi Guys,
could someone PLEASE tell me what this part is called and its function? Its located just beneath the car towards the front end. If the car is raised up and you walk from the back towards the front,.. just as the pipe starts to go upwards into the engine compartment, there is this rather fat section what looks like a wire mess for its covering. Further up, I have no clue what lies there but I am told there is a DPF (particulate Filter) and two turbos. BTW, my car is a 535d.
I need to know cause a few days back, I took my car to have some work done to it. I also complained that when I start the car, there was a knocking noise coming from the back of the car exhaust. If I shock the pipe from the back it some section was clearly knocking the suspension or body.
The dealer told me that after looking under the car, they found the exhaust to be pushed back about 4cm. This in turn was knocking the side of the body/suspension part. There are some rubber fixtures which should be vertical down but it was at an angle. Clearly the whole exhaust was pushed back towards the engine.
Now the picture which shows this part..(sorry its really bad but thats the best I could do with my nokia 9500i).. we noticed that part of the mess was pushed in and it was not even. THink if beer belly towards the bottom before the connection. I would call it damaged but the dealer claims all it took was to pull the whole system back out... thus stretching this mess back to normal. (no more beer belly).
They say it has nothing to do with the running of car engine but its there for flexibility. They also say its NOT the particulate filter so I have nothing to worry. Guys, is this correct? Does this part play no real function other than giving the exhaust some flexibility? I need to know cause tomorrow I am going to pick the car up. I need to know if they are telling me porkies and if I ought to kick up a fuss and make them replace it since I picked up this car from them a month ago?
Thanks
cheers

Flex pipe, for... flexibility in the exhaust system.
Would it be safe to say then, these dealers are telling the truth and I should not worry anymore after they pulled it back out and put it back to "normal"?
Phew,.. its a real relief if you say yes. Thanks a million.
Cheers

It should be fine if they simpy pull it out. Inside the mesh pipe you will usually find an expandable soft pipe, kind of like the aluminum dryer duct in your laundry room, it can be extended and compressed without damage. Hope this helps.
Its pretty clear now so this thread can be put to sleep.
just incase anyone who reads it and wanted to know what my initial complain was about,... I asked the dealer to look into
1) Fuel economy was hopeless for a diesel
2) knocking noise when the car started. Exhaust was hitting the side of the body and it came from the back area.
3) while accelerating from 1000 to 2000 rpm, I could just about hear a sort of rumble (grating sound) from either the engine or drive. Could not put finger on it but I wanted the dealer to look into it.
I am now told that ALL three are related due to the exhaust being pushed in. No one knows however how the exhaust got shoved in although I suspect it could have been the trailer when the car got transported to the dealer.
thanks guys.
cheers
