I don't want to spend $120.00 per hour to do a software upgrade that the dealer says takes 3 hours! Can an independant shop do this type of programming?

In a word - Yes! Unless you want to spend way more on the laptop and software to be able to do it yourself.

I just called BMW specialist in Tampa, he says he could upgrade the computer to the latest BMW software, is that really possible? I am a bit weary....

Yes some specialist have invested in the comuters to program these cars. I believe they do it of a disk rather than over a connection back to Germany though. The main downside to using them for retro fits and mods etc is that if the car ever gets reprogrammed by a main dealer these changes will be undone as the BMW software database wont have a record of them on your vehicle and will download software relevant for the info it has on your car.

$2K for a friggin upgrade??!?!?! Man, you need to shop around. Even in SoCal dealers will charge max 3 hours (3 x $130/hr = $390) - that's still robbery but way better than $2k. Did they at least offer you dinner before they screwed you?

$2,000? Are you sure it was a dealer and not a brothel??

One reason that I started this thread is that I want the angel eyes to act as my DRL and to turn off the DRL all together on my 04 530i. I figure an INDY should be able to do this for me for a much cheaper rate than the stealership. Anyone have any experience with this?
