can my car play ipod if it can read mp3 disc?

Hey guys,
I have 08 528i and thinking about getting BMW ipod adapter(the one that goes into the CDC slot).
My car got navi but no CDC and it can play mp3 disc.
As I read from many treads, if the stereo can play mp3 disc, it can play ipod as well?
Does this mean that all I have to buy is the correct adapter and hook it up? no software update/install from the dealer?
I don't know if this is covered before but I couldn't find clear answer.

The vehicle software has to be coded to recognize the BMW iPod interface. This has to be done by a BMW Center or someone with the NCS software and a cable.

I bought this car about 3 weeks ago CPO and they updated all the software- so they say... Anyways, they charge for software update for the ipod, right?
