Read my signature if you want to retrofit footwell lights. But what you have in your hand is the diagnostic plug and it also looks like the CD Changer prep too.

It's not the CD-changer prep (that's further behind the cover, if you your car has it) but it's the diagnostics interface that BMW dealers use to update all the infotainment systems connected to the MOST ring-bus. The connectors are identical though (1 fibre in, 1 fibre out and 2 electrical connections for 12V power).

For an update, they use the OBD2 plug for the regular modules, and this MOST connector for updating M-ASK/CCC, ULF-module, CD-Changer etc.
If it's not in use, a lightguide shorts it to make sure the ring connection is still intact. You'll see that some of your infotainment won't work if you don't connect this plug to its original position in the lightguide.

The bandwidth of MOST is pretty high (~11Mbit) so software updates are much faster through this plug than when they would have done it through the slow OBD2 interface.

Nope, I'm pretty sure he has two plugs showing there, one is the Diagnostic plug and the other is the CDC prep plug - see the 4 power connectors next to the MOST connectors the only device that uses such a plug up there is the CDC.
