The ability to play MP3's in the dash unit may require a software update to enable (and some units wont without new hardware). The original changer has no such ability. This thread may prove useful to you:

MP3_Retrofit.pdf

I was in the same situation untill last week when I searched this forum and found this SIB document (attached). Just print it and bring it your dealer. I did, and they re-coded my car. Four hours later, it lists all the mp3 and play them in the dash cd player. Next I plan to do the iPod integration kit install (DIY) and now as my car can read mp3 files, I'm hoping it will also be able to read my ipod without a visit to the dealer.

Right, pre-Sept '05 cars with navigation can have MP3 capability activated with a software update. No Nav = no MP3 on cars without Nav pre-Sept '05...

In addition to the retrofits, how you burn the CD matters. This thread discusses how best to do it. I found the ISO setting made the difference for me.

Did you show them the above attached retro bulletin? If they still don't want to do anything, may be it's time to take your business somewhere else, but before I do that I definately will talk to the service manager personally and tell his/her that.

I was in the same boat as you. I went to the dealer they said they never heard of it either but they took the time to look it up...found it and gave me a loaner car. They had a problem with it and had to keep it another day but it worked out in the end!
