My guess... and this is only a guess is that there is blockage in the drain tube for the A/C. AC units will all build up water and have some means to expel the water. Generally in cars it will have a tube that will discharge under the car. If the tube gets clogged then the water will collect until it finds it's way in to the passenger compartment. Unless someone has personal experience with this I would make a quick trip to the dealer.
Either that, or perhaps you're not purging the system properly? If you shut the car off without turning the compressor off about 10 minutes beforehand, the water that has formed as condensation will remain in the system. This will eventually mildew and create a funky smell. I suppose it is possible that the max air will force some of this deposit out upon startup which could be what you're noticing. I purge my AC religiously after each use (AC off, blower on high, outside air for ~10 minutes), and I get some slight mist in the vapor as well as some condensation on the vents until all of it has been forced out. |

Never purged the system on any of the BMW's I've owned.Never had a problem with condensation or the funky smell.Maybe I'm just lucky

Had the problem in a bad way with my E34 when I was in Arizona (dry heat) but never with the E39 (wet heat) here in VA. Go figure.
I'm not taking any chances. :) I have had the AC smell in my previous CFC-free cars (non-BMW). That makes me think that the climate here in VA could potentially give me troubles. Either way, I think that this condensation might be the source of the original poster's spraying vents. |
